Shorebirds : If I find them on the shore, in the shore, around the shore, sitting on a stick in the waves, they're shorebirds. That's why the belted kingfisher is here. And these are what we're going to be losing in the coming months after the disaster in the Gulf. How can anyone not be sick at heart as we lose thousands of birds, mammals, and even butterflies, and the the time being, I'll list the economy second.

Herons and Egrets : I've finally got this down from over 60 photos, but I can't help it. If it's a snowy egret shoveling up food with its yellow feet, I've got to take its picture. If it's a Great Blue Heron and he doesn't look completely like a slob, I'll take it. And I will keep taking the Black-capped Night Heron until I get a really good shot.

Photographic Life List - Birds of North America : Out of interest in maintaining a "life list", i decided to assemble a gallery listing the bird species of North America i have photographed. So, on display is a collection of images copied from other galleries of mine (wild photographs only). 1 image selected per species. Not all of the images are the best quality, but such is the nature of pursuing nature photography. As i capture "better" shots, i may swap some images out...and certainly i will add any new species.

Currently there are 339 species listed. Most recent additions are:

Barnacle Goose (December 2009)
Lapland Longspur, Ruffed Grouse, Short-eared Owl, Varied Thrush (January 2010)
Virginia Rail, Little Gull (April 2010)
Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Hooded Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, White-faced Ibis, Lark Sparrow, American Woodcock, Philadelphia Vireo, Tennessee Warbler, Whimbrel, Sedge Wren, Ovenbird, Golden-winged Warbler, Upland Sandpiper (May 2010)

Notes: Removed Gray-cheeked Thrush, and provided more definitive black scoter (under suspicion the juvenile bird i originally presented might in fact be surf scoter instead).

San Francisco Birding : I recently had the chance to visit San Francisco and do some birding. The trip revealed many firsts for me including the California Quail, Muscovy Duck, California Towhee, Western Scrub-Jay, Red-shouldered Hawk...and the list goes on. I think i could have spent a month walking around instead of a day...i love this city!
